The land of slate, Alta houses the biggest number of rock paintings in Europe. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

My suggestion:
Allow enough time to have a guided visit and to go round by yourself.
My review

I think Alta is an exceptional site in Norway. Alta Museum is on the biggest of the 45 rock art sites in the region. It's an open air museum. It's possible to view the 3,000 paintings via 5 km of well sign-posted paths.

I decided to take a museum guide with me. It meant I learned a lot more during the visit and didn't miss the meanings of the rock paintings. But I also enjoyed taking the time to walk around by myself, exploring these remains of prehistoric human activity. I especially remember the pictures of people at work and bears. These red paintings, which seem to stand out from the rocks, make you really wonder about what prehistoric human life was like.
